I called this one "A good read." Uzbekistan, 1941. Victor Sobel and his younger brother Marek, Poles released from a Siberian labour camp, had travelled south, ostensibly for Marek's health, and arrived in Kermine on the train from Tashkent. "The small town lying before them looked as if it had't changed since Tamerlane's rule five hundred years ago, except for a red banner arched across two wooden poles urging the proletarians of all countries to unite." Their gaze was fixed beyond the mountains where ran the border with Persia. Disaster supervened, however, and from then on it was Marek who had to take charge of their escape - Marek whom the events of the next few weeks were to change from an immature and unhealthy youth into a man capable of taking moral decisions. 226 pages.

The story begins with Julian Quintus, who comes to Rome on his seventeenth birthday, proud of his Roman heritage, hopeful of entering Caesar's legions. In the great hurly-burly of the city, Julian is unable to find a favorable audience with his beloved emperor. His frustrations lead to dispair, to the combat arena, to utter disgrace and, finally, to slavery in Aurelius' household. Out of the most grueling experiences, comes the miracle of his salvation. 370 pages.
