Pepernoten (not cookies)
1c. Sugar
1c. Syrup or honey
1/2 lb margarine
1/2 tsp. aniseed (did not use powdered form; I used seeds)
1/2 tsp. cloves
1/2 tsp. ginger
1/8 tsp. cardamon (a 49 gram bottle here is $7.99)
1/4 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. nutmeg
melt margarine. Add sugar, syrup and spices. Boil 2 minutes. Chill until very cold, in fridge


1/2 tsp. vanilla
1/2 tsp. soda
1 egg
1/4 c. sour milk (or regular milk with few drops vinegar)
6 c. flour

chill in freezer until almost frozen

Form into rolls as thick as your finger.

Slice 1/2 inch thick. Bake at 350 for 10 - 15 minutes on a greased cookie sheet. DON'T put them too close or they will spread and make ONE huge "pepernote" like I did.
