Paper Houses YOU can Make

(this page updated December 2007)

This one is for the wee ones, folks! Hopefully it will keep them busy. NOTE: the pieces of these little toy houses will need to be cut out of stiff paper of some sort; this requires the use of a knife of some sort; IT MAY BE BETTER FOR AN ADULT TO DO THIS FOR THEM. Don't let the wee ones cut off a finger; it might spoil my day.

PARENTS.......... GRANDPARENTS............... KINDERGARTENS........... GRADE SCHOOLS......... PLAYSCHOOLS......... THIS IS FOR YOU.

Ideas:

Color the houses before you put them together. Draw frames around the doors and windows? Maybe glue some cellophane inside the window holes too? Draw shingles on the roof? Add a window or two, maybe a door? Add people, animals? Design your own house? Church? School? Hospital? Office? Make a complete village? Make a base of some green cloth, to simulate grass? Design streets? If you make a little town with a whole lot of these houses, can you put a picture on your website and tell me the address so I can link to it? DO NOT SEND/GIVE me or anyone else any personal information such as name, address, age etc. An adult MUST be involved in this. If you have any suggestions for improving this page, please email me. If you *really* like this page, let me know.

NOTE: I'm trying to find a better way to show you the plans. Mine look very poor; sorry. But they do work just fine. You can download and print the plans for those now. If you can print them on stiff paper (maybe old file folders?) great; if not, you'll have to copy/trace the printout onto some stiffer paper. Maybe you can set your printer to Manual feed and then feed in much stiffer paper than if you use the paper tray.

You can also download all the patterns for buildings 1 - 5 in one ZIP file indicated just below house number 5. You can also download all the patterns for buildings 6 - 8 in one ZIP file indicated just below house number 8.

General Instructions:

After you have cut out the pieces, score with a ballpoint pen all the lines which indicate folds including the hinge sides of the doors and push the doors open. Then glue it together. Use a fast-drying glue. If you are using stiff paper with any printing on it, make sure that the printing will be on the INside of the house, so it won't show. All the pieces are intended to fit on pieces of stiff paper, standard size of 8.5 x 11 inches.

To hold the pieces in place while the glue dries, you could use some clips such as these which I bought at Radio Shack Regular old bobby pins might even do the trick. (cheaper!)

1. We'll start with the simplest projects and work up to the most complicated house. First, a very simple garage:

You need only 2 parts for this one, the floor/walls and the roof. click HERE for the set

2. This one is very slightly larger, a two-car garage:

You need only 2 parts for this one: the floor/walls and the roof; click HERE for the set

3. Now for our first house:

4. The next house is very similar but is slightly longer:

You need only 2 parts for this one.

For the floor/walls click HERE and for the roof click HERE.

Note that you need to use some tape on the inside/underside of the roof to hold the pieces in position. When gluing the roof on, hold the roof upside down in your hand and lower the house into it to make sure it is centered.

5. And the second house is not much more difficult; it has a chimney attached, going through a hole in the roof:

You need 3 parts for this one.

For the floor/walls: click HERE and for the roof and chimney click HERE.

If you want to download BUILDINGS 1 TO 5 in one ZIP file, CLICK HERE. Please let me know if you have any problems downloading it; there are 8 GIF files in this set, that is, 8 pages of patterns.

6. This one is a bit more complex: a split-level house:

You will need 4 parts for this one.

For the floor/walls click HERE and for the missing wall and 2 roofs click HERE

This one is a challenge! Watch where you cut.

7. This house is a bit complex because of the roof and "L" shaped floor.

You will need 6 parts for this one.

For the floor/walls click HERE. NOTE that the peak of the front wall has the very top cut off; you'll have to enlarge it.

For the house roof/carport-roof/chimney click HERE

For the carport/extra roof for back part click HERE

This one is not for beginners!

8. Here is the last one with fancy roof, carport and chimney. (very similar to the one above)

You will need 6 parts for this one:

For the floor/walls click HERE

For the house roof, chimney, pointed roof click HERE

For the carport and carport roof: click HERE

Be careful with the carport; note which end of the house it belongs to. Also, putting the little pointed roof over the main roof is awkward. I suggest slicing the two glue tabs off that little pointed roof and re-attaching them with scotch tape on the underside so that they will lay more flat.

Here are my latest and final additions: Sorry I don't have time to "clean them up." NOTE that these last 4 are NOT to scale. I'm leaving that up to you.

Elliott D told me:

I stumbled on your site and love it. I am a model railroader, and am currently building an Nscale set up. To save money i have been building my own houses. Your templates are perfect. I took them into photoshop and dropped in photo templates of bricks, siding, shingles etc. scaled tehm down to proper size and printed them on cardstock. I'm taking a few templates and altering to get different shaped houses, when finished I'll email you those.
